If you have wedding flower centerpieces to make, choose from three DIY examples. You don't need previous flower arranging or crafting experience to recreate these designs.

Low Floral Bouquet in Wedding Colors

A simple choice with plenty of visual impact is a bright bouquet in the wedding colors. Keeping the arrangement short means that guests can easily make eye contact across the table without the blooms getting in the way. Choosing various shades of the wedding colors gives your event a cohesive and sophisticated look. Because you can use any color or type of flower you like with this basic design, it works for any style of wedding.

Things You'll Need

For each centerpiece you'll need the following:

  • 3 large blooms, such as Gerbera daisies or dahlias
  • 5 roses in paler shades of the same color
  • A few stems of smaller flowers, such as snapdragons or ranunculus
  • Filler and greenery, as desired
  • 1 four-inch square glass vase, available at local craft stores and online from retailers like Save on Crafts
  • 1 10-inch mirror base, available at craft stores and in a 10-pack from Amazon.com
  • Waterproof floral tape
  • Scissors

What to Do

  1. Begin by choosing three stems of your largest flower. Loosely hold the three large blooms in your hand, resting the tips of the stems on the work surface. Bind the stems with waterproof floral tape, about four inches from the base of the flowers. Give the whole bouquet a slight twist to lock the stems against the tape.
  2. Select five roses and remove thorns and leaves. Begin adding the roses and smaller flowers to the bouquet. You'll need to turn the bouquet as you work to make sure it looks beautiful from all angles. As you place flowers on the edges, adjust the stems to give the centerpiece a slightly rounded look. Add one or two longer stems near the center.
  3. Add filler and greenery as desired to fill in any bare patches.
  4. Securely wrap the stems together using waterproof floral tape.
  5. Using a sharp pair of scissors, cut the stems at an angle. The finished bouquet should be about eight to ten inches tall. It may help to use a paint marker to mark the place you plan to cut the stems. Remove any leaves or foliage along the stems.
  6. Place the bouquet in the vase, which should have water and flower food in it. Adjust the height of any blooms that seem out of place and add filler as needed.
  7. Place the bouquet on top of a mirror base to add to its visual impact.

Crafty Mason Jar Centerpieces

If you're having a country wedding and love the rustic look of Mason jars, this easy centerpiece design is perfect for you. Because you can decorate the jars ahead of time, these centerpieces are great for a bride doing her own flowers or a mother of the bride helping out. You can quickly add the simple bouquets to the jars on the day of the wedding, allowing you to spend your time getting ready. This is an affordable centerpiece idea that looks stunning.

For each centerpiece, gather the following supplies:

  • 3 white dahlias
  • 1 stem of snapdragons in one of the wedding colors
  • 1 64-ounce wide-mouthed canning jar
  • Jar decorating supplies, such as scraps of lace, ribbon in wedding colors, burlap fabric, gold spray paint
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Scissors

What to Do

  1. Decorate the jars well before the wedding day. Take a few jars to well-ventilated place and spray paint them gold.
  2. Each jar, sprayed or not, should have some decoration with ribbon or lace as well. To do this, apply hot glue to the end of a piece of trim and press to the center of the glass. Allow it to cool slightly and then wrap the trim around the jar. Apply more glue where the trim overlaps and cut off any excess fabric or ribbon. To add bows, simply tie the bow and hot glue it to the trim.
  3. On the day of the wedding, cut all the dahlia stems at an angle to be about 10 inches in height. Place three dahlias in each jar, allowing the stems to cross.
  4. Cut each snapdragon stem to be about 14 inches tall. Place one snapdragon stem in the center of the group of dahlias.
  5. Fill each jar with water and flower food.

Sphere of Blooms

A flower sphere is a sophisticated and modern centerpiece choice for any wedding, especially when made out of a single type of flower in a high impact color. Carnations are an affordable choice, but you can use any sturdy flower like Gerbera daisies or roses. You can hang the sphere from the ceiling above each table or elevate it using a pedestal. Alternatively, this design works well supported in a low, wide vase. With proper care, these arrangements should last at least a day.

Things You'll Need

For each ball, you'll need the following:

  • 4 dozen carnations (at minimum), more for a larger sphere
  • 1 seven-inch or larger foam ball, available from craft stores
  • Flower-preserving dip, such as Crowning Glory
  • Floral wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Scissors
  • Rack for drying flowers
  • Ribbon, optional
  • Sharp pins, optional

What to Do

  1. Begin by cutting off the flower stems just below the head of the bloom. Dip each flower in preservative and allow it to dry on the rack.
  2. Cut the wire into pieces about four or five inches long. Bend each piece in half.
  3. Take one flower and poke the wire through it from the front so that both ends of the wire go all the way through the bloom and stick out where the stem would have been. Poke the ends of the wire into the foam ball.
  4. Repeat with each flower to cover the entire sphere in blooms.
  5. If you wish to hang the ball, use a piece of ribbon and two sharp pins. Press the pins in at an angle so that they cross inside the ball.

Keep It Simple

Making your own centerpieces is an excellent way to save on the cost of your wedding flowers; however, it's important to remember that time will be short on the day of the wedding. Anything you can do ahead of time is great, but it's also a good idea to choose simple designs that won't be too time-consuming to create. That way, you can minimize stress on the day of the wedding and spend your time enjoying this amazing day.
